英文越好的人越會發現,愈是簡單的常用字,愈難充分掌握其用法。我們這三天就從“look” “put” “turn”這三個最基本的單字開始學起。
第二天的基本單字是 “put” 。
(一) Put about
散佈(大部份是負面消息)。
Who put that lie about?
這謠言是誰散佈的?
(二) Put across
解釋,說明。
I’m not putting my meaning across very well.
我沒有把我的意思解釋得很清楚。
(三) Put away
(1)儲存,存放。
Put your notebook away in the cupboard, when you've finished working.
工作完成之後把筆記電腦放在櫃子裡。
Put away a good sum of money in the bank for retirement.
在銀行裡儲存一筆可觀的錢供退休之用
(2)收拾起來。
It's time to put away those foolish ideas and become serious.
打消蠢念頭,認真點吧!
(四) Put off
(1)關掉,熄滅。
Put the light off.
把燈熄了。
(2)推遲或取消。
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
今天能做的事不要推到明天。
(3)讓人反感。
He's a good salesman, but his offhand manner does tend to put people off.
他是個很好的推銷員,可是他那隨便的態度容易使人產生反感。
(五) Put through
(1)接通(電話)。
I am trying to put you through.
我正設法為你接通電話。
(2)完成,做成。
Put through an agreement.
達成協議。
(六) Put together
(1)把···放在一起,組合。
Put together all the files for reference.
把所有的檔案都收齊。
(2)加在一起,匯總起來。
Your department spent more last year than all the other departments put together.
你們部門去年的開銷比其他所有部門的加起來還多。
(七) Put up with
忍受,容忍。
I can’t put up with the noise.
我受不了這吵鬧。
(八) Stay put
留在原地,固定不動。
Stay put, I’ll be back soon.
別走開,我一會就回來。
These people stay put in one job all their lives.
這些人一輩子就做一種工作,從不變動。
