“fly”有很多意思，除了指飛行之外，亦可指「飛快地進行」或「快速通過」。”on the fly”可想而知是什麼意思。 
如果你做一件事”on the fly”，表示你動作很快，很多時間思索。 
此片語很易記，只要想飛行時動作有多快就好，不過這不是「on the fly」的由來。 
當飛行員駕駛飛機時，如果沒有儀器指示他們飛行的方向和方法，就得靠自己感覺風向和氣流的變化，最簡單的方法之一就是透過他們的座位。 
這個概念衍生出「fly by the seat of your pants」的片語，因為你得透過褲子來感覺飛機的變化。「fly by the seat of your pants」意指未經縝密的思考和計畫即採取行動，最後這個片語被簡化成「on the fly」。 例句：

• Tom was called out because the catcher caught the ball on the fly．湯姆被判出局，因為接球員接住了飛來的球。
• Getting the house ready for the visitors kept Mother on the fly all day．為了把房子整理好接待客人，母親忙碌了一整天。
