By observing exquisite works of art and connecting with a maternal culture, the innermost palpitations of Taiwanese women’s tender, hidden hearts create a global resonance beyond borders that can console the minds of people in distant lands. In response to an invitation from Macau’s Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau and curated by ceramic artist Lu Shu-chen, “Handicrafts of Feminine Wisdom — The Secret Garden of Mother and Grandmother” will be on display right around the time of Mother’s Day — from May 10 until June 8. The exhibit consists of seven Taiwanese women artists all over the age of 60. The joint exhibit will include embroidered patchwork quilts by Liu Hsiu-tzu, 92, seashell collages by Chang Cho-mei, 83, knitted and embroidered works by Lee Chen Dai-hua, 74, oil paintings by Cool Chen, 74, painted and engraved pottery by Chou Jui-hua, 64, handmade books colored with vegetable dyes by Lee Shiow-yen, 64, and papier-mache works by Liao Li-hua, 61. A delightful occasion to look forward to, the exhibit will be at the Taipa Houses-Museum’s Macao Exhibitions Gallery and House for Reception.

These close female companions who all live near Taiwan’s north coast use patchwork, embroidery and knitting to bring together talented Asian women’s artistic representations. Seashell collages, oil painting and pottery are also used to conjure up rural island images. Their diverse expressions also include handmade books colored with vegetable dye and papier-mache, all bringing together people’s tender thoughts concerning cherished feelings and the things they love.

They use needles and thread to stitch life together, clay to forge earthenware, seashells to depict the world, cook roots and leaves to dye cloth, crushed aggregates to make handmade books and paper pulp to tell stories. These grandmothers and mothers convey deep and immense love inside their hearts so people can take them for a spin. Come inspire yourself to live life afresh.
