A：這兩個字均意為「幾乎，差不多」，但用法上並不完全相同。

在 all, always, every 以及否定助動詞之前，almost 和 nearly 皆可用。例如：

• Almost/nearly all the teachers and students are there. (幾乎所有師生都在那裡)
• I almost/nearly always go on a business trip to the United State every year. (我幾乎每年都會到美國出差)
• Almost/nearly every time I see him he looks miserable. (我幾乎每次看見他，他都顯得很痛苦)
• My wife almost/nearly didn’t wake up on time. (我太太差點睡過了時間)

在 not, pretty, very 等副詞之後僅能用 nearly，不可使用 almost。例如：

• I have not nearly enough money. (我的錢遠遠不夠)
• They pretty nearly failed the exam. (他們差點沒通過考試)
• He very nearly died. (他幾乎死了)

在 any 以及 no, none, never, nobody, nothing 等否定詞之前僅能用 almost，不可使用 nearly。例如：

• Almost any student breezed through the exam. (幾乎所有學生都輕易通過測驗)
• I’ve almost never been so annoyed in all my life! (我這一生中從沒這樣惱火過)
• There’s almost no (= hardly any) tea left. (沒有剩什麼茶了)

除 almost 和 nearly 外，英文還有另外兩個字也可表達「幾乎，差不多」的意思，那就是 practically 和 virtually。practically 的用法與 almost 如出一轍 (但比較少用)，所以與 nearly 也有上述的用法差異。至於 virtually，其用法同時包含 almost 和 nearly 兩者在內。不過，大多數的文體指南都建議使用 almost 和 nearly，盡量少用 practically 和 virtually。
