Alishan Forest Railway to reopen in 2013

The Alishan Forest Railway, many sections of which were destroyed by Typhoon Morakot in 2009, is expected to fully reopen by the end of 2013, Minister Without Portfolio Lin Junq-tzer said Wednesday.
The narrow gauge railway, which is the main tourist attraction in the scenic area of Chiayi County, was badly damaged by the typhoon, particularly the section between the Fen-Chi Lake station and Alishan, said Lin, who also heads the Executive Yuan's Southern Taiwan Joint Services Center.
Construction of a bridge at the 71 km mark will be completed by the end of July 2012, while important reconstruction in 18 mudslide-hit areas near the Alishan river has already been completed. Lin noted, however, that flood prevention work is still ongoing and warned that with typhoon season approaching, more needs to be done in this regard.
Some of the less damaged sections of the line reopened in 2011, while the Shenmu section reopened in January this year, which is expected to revive tourism in the Alishan area, Lin added.
