1. put off

這個片語最常使用的定義是「延期、延後」。

Ex: The manager has put off the sales meeting until tomorrow. 經理已把業務會議延到明天舉行。

另一個也很常見的意思是「使失去興趣」，如：This event put me off going for any arranged date. 這件事讓我失去相親的興致。

2. Put something/ someone out

受詞是事物時，意思是「熄滅」。

Ex: I saw smoke coming out from the kitchen, so let’s go put out the fire. 我看到廚房傳出煙來，去滅火吧。

受詞若是人，意思是「使麻煩」，如：The host has surely put herself out to see that every guest is comfortable. 主人一定為了安置好每位來賓折騰了一會兒。

3. Put something/ someone down

這個片語有好幾個不同的意思，其中一個意思是「寫下來」。

Ex: Could you put down the meeting time and venue for me? 你可以寫下會議的時間和地點嗎？

若要指「匆匆記下」如：可以用jot down表示。受詞若是人，意思是「被視為」，如：He was put down as a chronic complainer. 他被認定是會常常抱怨的人。

4. Put aside

這個片語最常見的意思是「放置到一旁」，意思同set aside。

Ex: Please put aside the toys and come help me. 請把玩具放到一旁，過來幫我。

另一個意思是「儲存」，I am going to put aside a little bread for tomorrow’s breakfast. 我要留點麵包當作明天的早餐。

5. Put something/ someone in

這個片語在口語中很常聽到，受詞若是時間，意思是「花時間在某事上」。

This little boy puts in half an hour practicing playing the piano every day. 這個小男孩每天花半小時練鋼琴。

受詞若是人，意思是「安置、收留」，如：My friend is so nice that he is willing to put me in for two nights. 我朋友很好心，願意收留我兩晚。

6. Stay put

這是較非正式的表達方式，意思是「維持相同的姿勢」。

Ex: This toddler wouldn’t stay put, and kept running around the house. 這個小孩不肯乖乖坐著，一直在屋裡跑來跑去。
