From CNN Headline:Seduced into spending thousands on lottery tickets

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
*Jen Bucala likes to buy lottery tickets; an estimated $10,000 in 10 years.
*Psychology professor: Low entry fee is part of lottery's seduction.
*Study: 38 percent of poor think lottery best way for them to get hundreds of thousands.

例句:Glamorous ads seduce teenagers into tobacco addiction.
People are seduced into buying products they don’t need.

完整的是thousands (of dollars)of dollars被省掉了。
John spent thousands on his car.
2:John spent thousands of hours practicing the guitar. John spent thousands on his guitar.

Every day, each year, millions of Americans buy lottery tickets hoping to be the next millionaire. Let’s see what some Americans are saying about playing the lottery and their thoughts.

1."You gotta play in order to win. That's part of lotto. You never know,"
says Bucala, a Lindenhurst, New York, resident who works three jobs -- as a sales associate, an Avon Rep and a bridal consultant.

You gotta play in order to win
In order to
I work in order to save money to buy a house.
You gotta try in order to find out- 要試試看(動詞1)才能知道(動詞2)

2."Maybe something big might happen. There's not a whole lot of other things in your life where you put a small amount of money in and maybe something big will happen. It gives you a sliver of hope that you could turn your life around." says Frank Farley, a psychology professor at Temple University.

A sliver of hope
“sliver”
A sliver of glass, a sliver of land.
通常用在整段“A sliver of”+名詞。注意:雖然這裡用的是”hope”,但大部分時都是用在形容一點點,一小塊的具體東西上,如同例句(a sliver of glass, a sliver of land).
A sliver of disappointment (X)
A sliver of surprise (X)

3."I take care of things first," she says. "Food, rent -- Then you can go out and spend a dollar on the lotto." says Mineola Oaks, who is retired and living in Washington Heights, New York. She has played lotto every day, spending $3-$5 a day (and more on Tuesday) for over 20 years.

Take care of things first

Take care of things –
Take care of things of things + first –
John: Peter, can you come to my party tonight? Peter: Sure, but I need to take care of things first at work.
