Sideline字面意思就是旁邊的線。這是從運動場上借來的字，在商業和政治上一用，就有畫龍點睛，神來之筆。

比賽的球場都要畫邊線，就是sideline。通常站在邊線上的人都是教練和還沒（等著）上場的球員，所以sideline 這個字在日常的口語中比喻為「在場外觀望」。如political sidelines就是些政治旁觀者(他們不加入某派某黨但愛看熱鬧)。但有時旁觀者清，所以你可以說: 

• We can always get opinions from sidelines. 我們總是可以聽一聽旁觀者的意見。

球員被sidelined是指因某種原因而不能上場比賽。如 :

大企業如有多種業務，那它的某項次要業務就可以被冠上sideline。如某人有一份以上的工作，主要職業可以叫做primary job; 那不太重要的可稱作為sideline，也叫second job。做second job的人英語稱moonlighter。
和sideline有關有一些有意思的片語，例如to be left on the sidelines。被時間淘汰，例如： 

• The telecommunications market is so competitive and if these two companies do not offer competitive rates, then they will surely be left on the sidelines. 通訊市場的競爭是如此激烈，如果這兩家公司不能給出有競爭力的價格，那他們就一定會被淘汰。
