CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF MJ
Beyond his catchy dance songs, Jackson was also known for his touching ballads. Often, it was through these ballads that he managed to convey precious, personal messages to his listeners. "Man in the Mirror" and "I'll Be There" were two of the many masterpieces that showed fans another side of the superstar, and it was these two songs that singer David Wong performed at the pre-show event.
"You can learn so much from all that he did. Sometimes we really have to listen to what he said in his songs, because there are so many messages in them," Wong said.
"If we listen to Michael's songs, I think we can hear that they're really positive and really life-changing. If you listen to the lyrics, they really make you want to be a better person," he added. "I think seeing the show will really reinforce how immortal he is. So it's actually a perfect name for a perfect show."
Despite the miserable weather on the day of the pre-show event, nothing could dampen the passion and spirit of the fans who attended the carnival. Taiwanese Michael Jackson impersonator Lee Yen-ting paid tribute to the King of Pop with dazzling performances of "Smooth Criminal" and "Jam," while a young MJ impersonator, 10-year-old Ray Yu, thrilled the audience with his impressive rendition of "Thriller." "We can learn all of his dance moves, but we can never replace or replicate his spirit," Yu said after his performance.
Various booths were set up around the venue so that fans could get an exciting sneak peek at what they can expect from the show. Cirque du Soleil costumes that feature prominently in the show were also on display. These costumes included the welder outfit used for the "Dancing Machine" number, the gangster costume for "Smooth Criminal," the soldier costume for "They Don't Care About Us," and the tree lady costume for "Wanna Be Starting Something."
In another booth, fans had their portrait drawn for each "check in" they posted on Facebook. Perhaps the most popular booth among the attendees was the one containing elaborate displays of limited edition Michael Jackson products, records, posters and more, which were all provided by loyal MJ fans.
Many of those who attended the event left with a huge interest in seeing the Cirque du Soleil show, and it is easy to see why. While creating this wonderful show, Cirque du Soleil went to great lengths to capture the spirit of Jackson, and in doing so it has ensured that a new generation of fans can experience his remarkable music and artistic style.
