MOVIE SYNOPSIS

Set in the near future, "Pacific Rim" tells the story of a world where enormous monsters have risen from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a war that destroys much of the world. In order to fight these new enemies, humankind designs a new type of weapon: gigantic robots called Jaegers, which are controlled by two pilots working together. As the war continues, however, even these

massive machines struggle to defeat the powerful monsters.

Directing chaos

Far East meets Old West in director Guillermo del Toro's monstrous blockbuster

When the monsters attack in director Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," they'll bring an Old West feel to a Far East setting. Yet it's the entire globe in peril in del Toro's sci-fi action adventure film (out July 11), which pits 25-story-tall manmade robots against equally sizable creatures that rise from the Pacific Ocean, threatening to destroy all of humanity.

For del Toro, making "Pacific Rim" was one of the best experiences of his career. This was "the only movie where I didn't want it to end, frankly," said the filmmaker, who is best known for directing "Hellboy" and "Pan's Labyrinth." Luckily, that experience doesn't have to end: The excitement surrounding "Pacific Rim" has been so huge that they're already working on a sequel, the director noted.

The monsters in this new film are called "Kaiju," a Japanese word that translates as "strange beast." They're an homage to the monstrous stars of Asian films and TV shows, such as "Godzilla," that del Toro watched as a kid growing up in Mexico. "I grew up with a steady Kaiju diet," the director recalled.

The monsters aren't the only strange occurrence in the world of "Pacific Rim," del Toro said. "It's really creating a world that's been shaped by two anomalies: the giant monsters and the giant robots people create to fight them." Del Toro also put a spin on the humans and their robots, called Jaegers, that reflects westerns as a key inspiration.
