英文裡有很多看起來像「似是而非」或「似非而是」的表達，字面看來是一回事，真正涵意又是另外一回事。最常見的是You can’t be too careful. (再小心也不為過；越小心越好）。不只是英文，中文也一樣，像「要你好看」，真正意思是「讓你很難看」！
上週自由時報引述里昂證券的外資分析報告，說馬英九會輸掉2012大選。里昂證券的原文:「We maintain the view we proposed last June, that the 2012 Presidential election is the KMT's to lose.」 這究竟是馬英九會要保住還是失去總統寶座？我們趁機談一談"someone's to lose"? 的用法。
希拉蕊競選美國總統時，《The Economist》有一篇報導：The American presidency is Hillary Clinton's to lose。
這一句中文要怎樣解？先來看看英文have nothing to lose的說法，它的意思是「不會有損失」，有一句鼓勵人的話叫做You have nothing to lose and everything to gain everything. (你什麼都不會失去，反而會獲得更多）。
《The Economist》的意思是，希拉蕊競選美國總統，勝算很大，除非她犯嚴重過失，煮熟的鴨子才會飛走。 意思是Hillary Clinton almost has the American presidency in her hands。後見之明，《the Economist》這個預測顯然失準。
在工作中，偶或聽到人們說The position is likely yours to lose. 看來這份職務非你莫屬，大好機會就在眼前，你卻不懂得把握，事後可以說：The opportunity was mine to lose, and lose it I did! 本來是你的，但煮熟的鴨子還是會飛走！
里昂證券也沒有說馬英九會輸，話是這麼說，讀者永遠有詮釋的權力－－看來你勝算很大，但當心，煮熟的鴨子還是會飛走的！這樣解釋也無不可。
我們來看看幾個似非而是表達方式：
1. Look out! 當心！不是“向外看”。
2. What a shame! 多可惜！真遺憾！不是“多可恥”。
3. You don't say! 真的嗎！不是“你別說”。
4.You can say that again! 沒錯！不是“你可以再說一遍”。
5. I haven't slept better. 我睡得好極了。不是“我從未睡過好覺”。
6. You can't be too careful in your work. 你工作越細心越好。不是“你工作不能太細心”。
7. It has been two years since I smoked. 我戒煙二年了。不是“我抽煙兩年了”。
8. All his friends did not turn up. 他的朋友沒有到齊。不是“他的朋友全都沒到”。
9. People will be long forgetting her. 人們在會記住她很久。不是“人們會永遠忘記她”。
10. He was only too pleased to let them go. 他很樂意讓他們走。不是“他太高興了，不願讓他們走”。
11.Mike appears to be no wiser than before. Mike 還是不懂。不是"Mike看起來不比以前聰明＂。
12.He is a white-haired boy of the general manager. 他是總經理眼前的大紅人。不是他是總經理的一個早生白髮的兒子。White-haired boy 和fair-haired boy 是口語，意思是“受特別待遇的人”，“寵兒”。
13. What’s cooking? 發生了什麽事？不是"你在烹調什麽食物?"
14. What are you going to sell? 你的目的何在？不是"你想賣什麽東西？
15.Where is your cap? 你的禮貌到哪去了？不是"你的帽子在哪里？"Where is your cap?"是對小孩進行禮貌教育時說的話。
16. Ned has a weakness for wine. Ned 特別喜歡喝酒。不是Ned 不善於喝酒。weakness(名詞)，在這裡指“嗜好”，“癖好”，不是“弱點”，“缺點” 。
17. The library will be off-limits to the public until re-carpeting project is completed.圖書館在新地毯鋪好前不對外不開放。不是"圖書館在地毯鋪好前沒有限制出入"。
