假如你講英文有一開口就是“actually”的習慣，最好想辦法改變。因為這是老闆們最不欣賞的一個英文字。
Actually是一個主觀的轉折語氣。意思是，我有不同想法。中文我們把它說成「實際上」、「其實」。例如：
He seems to be doing nothing, but actually he is just biding his time. 他看上去無所事事，其實卻在等待良機。
Actually也發生在，你想告訴別人一個壞消息，例如：
Richard wants to invite us to spend the weekend at his cottage. Isn't that exciting? 理查要邀大家去他的小屋渡假，太好了。
Actually, I've already said I can't go. 我已經說我沒法去了。
很多人用actually的時候，並沒有轉折或反駁的意思，只是在接別人的話頭follow的一個習慣。例如：
A: Your company is growing rapidly. 你公司成長很快。
B: Yes. Actually we’ll be taping into the greater China market this year. 對啊，我們明年會打進大中華市場。
Actually不是個好字，文法沒錯，但不必常用。用多了Actually起碼有兩個缺點：第一個，讓人覺得你自以為是。最不受老美歡迎的10個字當中，actually就名列其中。
第二個缺點是，actually引導出來的，都是在別人的話裡做文章，你這樣說，我卻認為怎麼樣，久而久之，缺乏開創性，在談話中會變follow，而不是lead.
有一個片語和actually很像，也叫其實，是in fact。actually 通常是用在不完全同意對方的說法，或對自己前面講的那句話做些修正的時候；in fact 多用在要對之前說的話作補充, 或是舉出例證強調時。例如：
I love my new job. In fact, I think it's the greatest job I've had. 我喜歡我的新工作，它是我做過最棒的工作。
