Senior politicians form election watchdog committee

China previously interfered in Taiwan’s elections, most notably in 1996 when it tried to influence the outcome by firing missiles off the coast of Taiwan. To prevent a repeat event, a group of senior politicians have formed an election watchdog committee.

The International Committee for Fair Elections in Taiwan is the first group of its kind. It was established in part by former government officials, including those with international experience. Among the founders are former presidential advisers Wu Li-pei and Peng Ming-min. The latter mentioned a concern.

Peng Ming-min
Committee Chairman
During the elections, airline tickets from China to Taiwan have been discounted. We feel this is abnormal.

Because these senior politicians were worried about foul play, they sought overseas support from Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs
It’s being held to assist in ensuring that there is no backsliding in the achievement of democracy in Taiwan. We want Taiwan to continue being a beacon of democracy, shining a bright light across the Taiwan Strait to the imprisoned people of communist China.

The election committee’s purpose is to protect Taiwan’s democracy by keeping it free from foreign influence. Almost a hundred democratic leaders from around the world have joined, and former President Lee Teng-hui is serving as its honorary chairman.
