The ‘protester’ is selected as Time’s Person of the Year for 2011
Time magazine’s highly anticipated Person of the Year for 2011 is … the Protester. The magazine made the call to recognize the dissent that has spread from the Middle East to Europe and the U.S. and the way protesters are reshaping global politics.
Time magazine announced its choice on Dec. 14, revealing a magazine cover showing an Arab woman with a scarf covering her face. She represents the protesters who have pushed for change in a wave of protest movements around the world.

Time’s World Editor
This year’s person of the year is the protester. It’s been a remarkable year for political protests across the world, a year that began with the Arab Spring and a year that’s ending with protests in many parts of the world, including in Russia, in Syria, and across Europe and across the United States with the Occupy Wall Street movement.
The Jasmine Revolution led to the overthrow of entrenched dictators in the Arab world. The “Occupy Wall Street” movement and protests in eurozone countries challenged economic assumptions in their regions. Time magazine felt these protests have redefined people power and changed the face of global politics.
Finishing second was William McRaven, the head of the U.S. military’s clandestine strike force who led the mission that stripped al-Qaeda of its leader. In third was Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei.
